Choosing community access supports
Community access is one of the most common NDIS supports, and also one of the most misused. Here is how I think about it.
Community access funding is meant to help participants engage with their community in a meaningful way. In practice, it can drift into transactional outings that tick a box without doing much.
When I plan community access with a participant, I start with what they actually want more of in their life. Sometimes that is a regular cafe visit. Sometimes it is library time. Sometimes it is the local pool. The activity matters less than the consistency.
Good community access supports are repeatable. The same place, the same day, the same routine, until that activity stops feeling like an outing and starts feeling like part of a normal week.
If your current community access bookings feel random or rushed, it is worth talking to your worker or coordinator about what a steadier shape might look like.
